Interesting discussion with Reed Smith, regarding the integration of social media into existing marketing efforts. Unfortunately, most hospitals are still struggling with expanding their reach effectively outside their very own website (let alone feed back social media information to their website).
In fact, I recently received an email from a hospital that stated: “In terms of social media – if we could embed Facebook into our site, we would. However, we can’t.” I am not sure if this statement was meant as a way to cross-promote Facebook on their site, or a more insidious to indicate they want to leverage a tighter control over social media, by hosting it directly.
Either way, it’s a losing proposition – social media, by it’s nature, is of, for and by the people. Hospitals are only visiting…and need to respect the rules of the “people’s media”.
